How’d we get here? We moved into said apartment a few months after my husband was offered a lead on a potential promotion through a job transfer. It was a fantastic opportunity that he was really excited about, but I confess that after he first told me about it, I think I lost about 3 nights’ worth of sleep. All night my eyes would stay wide as saucers, their gaze glued to the ceiling while I tried to fathom this concept that was so different from the newlywed life we’d imagined. It’s not that it was a bad concept; it was just so radically and completely different. It involved sacrificing comfortable ideas, and it involved a very, very big cross-country move to a city that made the largest city I’d ever lived in look like an anthill. I prayed a lot. I had to really surrender the concept to God. There came a point where I accepted this unexpected fork in the road as perhaps a part of where God was intentionally leading us, and in that I started to feel a kinship to the idea. Apart from God, moving far away is something I’d never have chosen or considered. There even came to be a surprising lead on an “in” at a brand that I’ve long admired, which further helped to quell the shock. Graduating into the very beginning of a recession hadn’t left much room to gain the prerequisite 3-7+ years of design firm experience that corporations and firms who were hiring were looking to acquire, and I’d already sent out enough cover letters, resumes, and portfolio samples to have wallpapered our entire rental unit as well as halfway down our city block.
